Chicana author, poet, and immigrant rights activist Demetria Martinez is based in La Cienega, New Mexico. Her acclaimed works include the widely translated novel Mother Tongue, set during the Sanctuary Movement. The novel was powerfully inspired by her 1988 conspiracy trial, where she faced a potential 25 years in prison for her work covering the plight of Central American refugees.

During the historic trial, the U.S. government attempted to use her own poetry as evidence against her, but she was ultimately acquitted of all charges on First Amendment grounds. Today, she continues to bridge art and activism.

Her latest release, Poetry in Dangerous Times: Two Women, Two Worlds (coauthored with poet Susan Sherman), is available now.
