Chicana author, poet, and immigrant rights activist Demetria Martinez was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She earned a BA from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. She went on to pursue journalism, covering religion for the Albuquerque Journal and writing for the National Catholic Reporter, where she served as a national news editor and a columnist.
